Week 42 – Moonlit Nights

Crossroads Baptist Church stays lit on a Sunday night.

This photo may seem to have something in common with another photo taken previously this year. It very well may… but the previous photo was taken using a car for a tripod. This one was taken using a tripod. Note the shadows on the building. Try not to note the ridiculous blue aberration by the windows. I’ve certainly decided to ignore it.

Week 41 – Ten Strike Kickball

David Philpot kicks the ball while playing kickball on Saturday afternoon.

I really enjoy shooting sports, but while shooting for a real team, it’s hard to often get anything but the far-away telephoto shots. That’s why when I have the opportunity to shoot just a few friends playing a pickup game of something, I take full advantage of the opportunity to “get all up in there” and go wide-angle. I would have liked to be even closer for this shot, to be honest, but the ball in frame and posing is probably my favorite that I took of this type while at the game.

Week 40 – Procrastination

Luke's hamster tries to escape.

You could say that this is some introspective photograph wherein the hamster represents humanity, struggling to escape some sort of cage which provides all that it needs, yet still restrains.

Or you could say that I didn’t take this picture until just under the wire, and it’s the product of my procrastination. One of the two.

Week 38 – Going for Grass

Luke tosses his bocce ball while his dad and brother look on.

This week I was presented with the chance to shoot sports, which is something I heartily enjoy doing. It just happened that the sports happened to be a game of bocce ball played by my family in the backyard. I was still able to get a sense of action in the ball and Luke’s hand, which is something I was aiming for, so that’s nice– mission accomplished on that front!

I have no recollection of the result of this throw.

Week 37 – A Respite from Summer

Stephen goes up for some sort of spike-like action while playing Volleyball at North Shore park on Friday.

The oppressive heat of summer let up for the weekend, which allowed outdoor activities to flourish and take root, which was fun from a take-pictures-of-stuff point of view! There was a group of LARPers playing at North Shore as well, and I took some photos, but on account of them all being high schoolers I don’t know, I figured the smart decision would be to not post those. So we are left with a wide-angle volleyball picture which is ok, but I feel could have been better somehow.

Week 36 – Tonight, that dream dies

Andrew and Chandler prepare to go off and have adventures together under a sea of sparklers.

This is not the most well-exposed photo of the night, or the most well-focused, and it needed a lot of work in RAW. However, I like it because it seems to have a little bit of that something different, that heart, that a generic photo might not have. I did get some more generic, easy pictures at the Cagle wedding, but this one might be my favorite because it was hard. I suppose you could add in a marriage analogy there somewhere, but I’ll try not to cheapen it that way. This is just two elated people enjoying the night.

Week 35 – Tuesday Night Times

Melissa Booth paints the cheek of a girl at the TNT back-to-school event on Tuesday night at Tamina.

I’ve been working at Tamina on Tuesday nights for a while now (most of the year, I think) but have never taken pictures there. Well, with this big back-to-school bash, the opportunity presented itself, so I brought my camera and got some shots off! There were lots of kids, and we listed to some preaching and ate food– a southern church kind of thing. I was happy with this photo of Melissa, but the lady in the back had a distracting turquoise shirt, so I made it black-and-white. For original color, go here.

Week 34 – Ready for Blast-off

Shawna will be an awesome first-year teacher of either first grade or kindergarten at Deretchin in a week.

Shawna is all ready to go and be a real grown-up with her teaching job! At this point, we’re still not 100% sure which grade she’ll be teaching, but no matter which one, I’m sure she’ll do fantastic. I’d like to watch her teach kids in the classroom, but we’re pretty sure that’s illegal or something. In any case, you can see the theme– the world and exploration!

I threw together a weird setup for this photo. I had the flash on-camera (my off-camera trigger is broken) and I pointed at the ceiling, but put a big piece of cardboard in between Shawna and the flash so no light would hit her directly from it. I’m not sure if it really had any effect.

Week 33 – Rocking Out

Fogg lets the music move him as he and others play Rock Band III.

Playing Rock Band is a great use of time among our friends. We have been known to ace the majority of Foo Fighters’ catalog at times.

I am not super-pleased with this picture (lots of un-useful empty space) but the action contained therein is better than anything else I ended up with, so I figured it’ll make it for Photo Of The Week.

Week 32 – A New Character Has Appeared

My family's new dog, Maisey, licks her lips after being fed a treat.

My family got a new pet dog recently, so it was only a matter of time until she showed up in a photo of the week. She’s a very interesting dog– she doesn’t lick people at all, like most other dogs tend to. She just sniffs and keeps on moving. This is a rare glimpse of her tongue that is almost never seen. Preferably, the focus would have been on her eyes, but I feel it work as a wide-angled pet shot regardless.
