Week 9 – Past Times

My brother Luke plays some Mario Kart. He is better at it than me now. This hurts to write.

My family has just returned to Texas from Alaska (a long way!) and so it certainly seemed fitting to celebrate that with an image of one of my best subjects: Luke. This picture itself isn’t too interesting (cool LED light on Luke’s face, nice framing of the stuffed salmon!) which I might want to blame on the fact that I now have a gimped camera, but I just really put it off to the last minute. But the blog-like spirit this photo holds (return of the Joneses) is nice enough that I’m happy, if not ecstatic, with it.

Week 8 – School of Worship

The lead vocalist from the band "School of Worship" leads the singing for RUSH weekend in the student building.

This weekend was enjoyable, because it was our church’s yearly disciple now (what we call RUSH). I got to be a leader, and that was well and good, but I knew I would have a chance to get some decent photos. So I brought my camera! Alas, as I pulled it out of my bag, I realized that the main shutter had almost all gone– it didn’t have any soft touch response. Troublesome, but I still had the battery grip, and I was able to get this shot that I like of the leader singer belting it out.

Week 7 – Cookin’ Love

The three phases of Valentine's Day cookie baking.

Shawna made some Valentines cookies this weekend. They were fun to make, but more fun to eat.

I enjoyed looking up how to write down “love” in every language, and then trying to copy the foreign symbols into icing writing. Not the easiest thing in the world, but cool enough to try. If you want to see a better image so you can read all the neat words, click here. See what languages you can identify!

Week 6 – Low Light

Colin talks to Stephen at Sweet Eugene's, a coffee shop in College Station, TX.

The coffee shop where I took this photo was very dark, which was ok, because I happened to be carrying around my 50mm 1.8 lens. I shot Colin a couple times before I decided to edge Stephen’s profile into the frame, and I like how it turned out. Maybe other people don’t. But I feel this is one of the more interesting and well-composed shots I’ve done so far this year.

Week 5 – Church at Night

Crossroads Baptist Church at night whilst a car drives by.

I have begun once again to run slides at church. For that reason, I was there late on Wednesday night this week. It seemed a good a time as any to get a nice long exposure of the building. Car driving by while the shutter was open? Merely a bonus. I’m torn on whether or not it’s too distracting, but then again, I have that giant lens flare going on as well, so distractions aren’t really what I’m worrying about for this one.

Week 4 – Chili Night

Nathan Lewis pours some chili into a cup. He was a judge for the chili contest that the Young Singles / Crossties held.

I sort of / kind of shot an event this last week. My sunday school class of “young singles” had a chili night with the older folks at our church– the 55+ crowd. It was a lot of fun. I didn’t get any great standout shots, though. I guess I’m kind of pleased with this one, but I feel I could have made it more interesting somehow.  I’m also not sure that having the focal point on the ladle instead of his face was wise, but it was a quick decision to make.

Week 3 – Phantom Pete

Stephen sits at Baker Street Pub at The Woodlands Waterway.

I shot this one on a whim while eating dinner, and it turned out pretty nice.  The 1.8 prime helped out in that respect.
I’m always hesitant about making photos black and white, simply because I feel that a lot of the time people use it as a crutch. And it may be one for me here. But I like this more than the colo(u)r version.

Week 2 – Flowers

Shawna matches.

Shawna's new umbrella goes with her shirt, which goes for a photo.

For my first photo that I actually took in 2012, an image of Shawna. I wish that I would have exposed it better (I had to fix a lot in RAW, and the glasses reflections kill me) but I liked the fact that her shirt was as flowery as her newly-gotten umbrella (parasol?).

I was planning to shoot some fun restaurants in downtown Houston this week, but perhaps they will show up on this blog at another point.

Week 1 – Connectivity

Connectivity

Megan and Shawna Skype into the holidays.

Hopefully this photo will set a precedent for my 52 project— namely, that my photos will all be interesting and eye-catching. Technically sound photos are nice, and with practice more of my photos will be so, but I think that part of the point of this yearlong plan is to take pictures that people like looking at, not just that people can look at.

Here’s hoping to a photographically fun new year!
